Minister Tonio Fenech said in Parliament that four companies have been recognized as being qualified to put forward tenders for the contract to lay the power cable between Sicily and Malta.
This follows two nation-wide power cuts this year, in which Malta and Gozo were hit by a widespread power cut in March and another in April. According to Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, a technical fault in boiler no 7 at the Marsa power station is to blame for the first power cut, while the second power cut resulted from a fault that occurred during switching operations at Delimara power station.
Malta is set to connect to the European energy grid to get electricity through a cable from Italy.
In another Parliamentary question, Minister Tonio Fenech said that the power station at Delimara will be using the same fuel which is being used at the moment already at the Delimara and Marsa power stations, which is heavy fuel oil.
