We got some interesting reactions when my husband, Nick Gelormino, and I told people we were traveling to Sicily for two weeks. The Mafia or poverty come to mind for many people when they think of Sicily, the large island off the toe of Italy's boot. We found neither. We did find excellent food, incredible natural beauty and plenty of history.
We flew to Palermo, rented a car and took a 30-minute drive to the town of Castellammare del Golfo. There we found a picturesque fishing village built on a hillside overlooking a lovely harbor. We stayed at a small hotel right on the harbor and when we stepped onto the balcony of our room it felt like we had been transported into a picture postcard. Fishermen worked on their boats and mended fishing nets with the remains of a 17th century castle in the background...

We chose western Sicily because my husband wanted to visit the town where his grandfather was born and lived for 12 years before coming to the United States.
