SICILY'S regional leader yesterday faced calls to resign after Italian prosecutors opened an investigation into allegations that he has ties with the Mafia.
Raffaele Lombardo is accused of having links with Vincenzo Aiello, Mafia boss of the eastern Sicilian city of Catania, who allegedly bankrolled his election campaign. Lombardo's brother Angelo, a lawmaker in Italy's national parliament, is also under investigation along with Sicilian mayors and local politicians.
Lombardo said prosecutors had not notified him of the investigation. - AFP
