Sicily and Naples will organise a series of initiatives in the coming three years, in which the two regions will work together to promote culture as a driving force for social-economic development. The project 'Mediterranean Cities', organised by the Regions of Sicily and Campania in collaboration with the Economic Development Ministry and the Foreign Ministry, was presented today in Palermo by Governors Raffaele Lombardo and Antonio Bassolino.
The two Regions have entrusted the project's management to Riso-Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily and the Campania Festival Foundation. The goal of the project is to favour dialogue, exchange and collaboration in the art and culture sector between countries on the northern and southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea (Morocco, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Spain, Greece and Turkey). The most important event will take place in August and September 2011. In 20 Sicilian cities contemporary art exhibitions will be organised in a sort of 'twinning' with 20 Mediterranean cities.
For example, Agrigento will open its doors to Istanbul, Giarre (Catania) to Crete, Messina to Seville. In the same period, ten cities in the Mediterranean area will present their projects in Naples, which will become the capital of theatre, music and art in general. The Ministry of Economic Development has allocated 6 million euros to the project, FAS funds (funds for under-utilised areas) from the Sicily and Campania Region have allocated another 6 million. The Campania Region has planned to pay 8 million euros more through its regional programme.
