Wine expert Sue Guerra blogs about everything there is to know about wine, Under the Volcano

The volcanic eruption in Iceland last week has me thinking a lot about one of my favorite wines—Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso—a red wine from the vineyards on Sicily’s Mount Etna—the most active volcano in Europe.

Mount Etna is in the midst of a series of eruptions—just a snippet in the long-documented history of eruptions that continually threaten the largest cities in the area and the many small villages along the mountain’s flanks.

These facts have caused me to contemplate the fragility of this versatile food wine that at about $17 a bottle has become the de facto “house pour” of La Casa Guerra-Corazza.

Vine growing and wine making are nothing new to this region. According to Jancis Robinson, the number of estates in the Etna DOC is growing and includes newcomers from Italy as well as other parts of Europe—an indication of how far a passionate winemaker will go to create wines with truly distinctive character.
